Hi, my name is Rob and I’m the founder of El Universo del ingles - an online platform for people in Spain who want to learn English online or at an academy. The platform is also for students, teachers and parents to be able to review language schools. I founded this platform in the middle of 2016 and I don’t think I’m the only one who can’t help but feel that standards and working practices at some of the language schools in Spain are lacking and in some cases they are downright lousy and rotten!
I worked in one, which I won’t name, but the owner made excuses as to why they couldn’t pay me all of my salary. There were many other problems and teachers would frequently quit and the students would wonder where their teacher went! Cutting a long story short, I managed to work it out with my employer but probably just like you, you’ll have a similar story or know somebody who has had a similar experience.
So who is the real loser in all of this? Ultimately it’s the students who go to them that lose out on getting a better education for the money that’s paid and if you’re like me then you’ll have found it to be frustrating that there’s nothing you could have done to change it and a few years ago I was thinking, well what if there was a way to change it and make it better?
So, I started El Universo del Ingles and it’s been growing quite a lot over the last six months but what it really needs is YOU to make that change and so we’re calling all English teachers who work or have worked in Spain at a language school to go onto the website and review the English academies that they’ve worked in.
As a native English teacher, I’ve been told by some school owners, who I won’t name, that it’s arrogant to expect more but I strongly disagree because this isn't about the teachers, ultimately it’s about students’ education and they deserve more! Some school owners (but not all) wrongly believe that English teachers are the reason why the academies are the way that they are, but as you know, this is complete rubbish! Language schools in Spain need a shake up and it is our mission to bring about this change and empower learners of English with everything they need to succeed.
There are 4 criterion which you can rate out of 5 - quality to price ratio, use of technology, the teachers and institutional standards. Of course, you’ll see that all of this is in Spanish and so it would be ideal if you could write it in Spanish, but don’t worry if you can’t.
Ultimately all of this should help bring about better working practices in language schools across Spain - which is good for you as the teacher and more importantly - it’s better for the students!
None of this is to say that some of you won’t have had a positive experience, and we also want your reviews too! I have also worked in some good schools and it would be unfair not to mention that there are some English academies that do things properly but I think most teachers will agree that the entire industry is in dire need of CHANGE AND IMPROVEMENT for students AND teachers.
Also, even if you did have quite a negative experience, please refrain from saying anything that isn’t true or aims to damage the school in some way. Please be objective and say WHAT’S GOOD and WHAT NEEDS TO IMPROVE OR CHANGE.
If the school you want to review isn’t actually listed on the platform, then send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and it will be added for you.
To be able to write a review, you first need to create an account.
Thank you for watching and we look forward to receiving your reviews!
